Introduction

Indravati National Park, in the far southwest of Bastar district along the Indravati river, is one of India's most significant reserves for the critically endangered wild buffalo, alongside supporting tigers, leopards and a substantial elephant population within its dense forest terrain. Its remote location near the Maharashtra border has historically limited both development and tourist access.

Given ongoing security considerations in parts of the wider region, visits typically require careful advance planning and coordination with forest authorities, making Indravati one of the more challenging — but for committed wildlife travellers, most rewarding — reserves to reach in Chhattisgarh.

History

Declared a national park in 1981 as part of Project Tiger, Indravati's isolation has helped preserve one of the last significant wild buffalo populations in peninsular India, a species that has disappeared from much of its former range elsewhere.

Best time to visit

November to April; access requires advance planning and checking current conditions with forest authorities.

How to reach

About 300km from Raipur; typically accessed via Jagdalpur with local arrangement.
