Introduction

Kaziranga National Park is one of India's most famous wildlife destinations, located in the Golaghat, Nagaon, and Sonitpur districts of Assam. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park is renowned for having the world's largest population of the one-horned rhinoceros. Spread across vast grasslands, wetlands, and tropical forests, Kaziranga is home to diverse wildlife including tigers, elephants, wild water buffaloes, swamp deer, and numerous bird species. The park's unique ecosystem, rich biodiversity, and successful conservation efforts make it one of India's most important protected areas and a major destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers.

History

The history of Kaziranga's conservation began in the early 20th century when concerns grew over the declining population of the one-horned rhinoceros due to hunting and habitat loss. In 1905, the area was proposed as a protected reserve through the efforts of Mary Curzon, the wife of Lord Curzon, after she visited Assam and recognised the need to protect the rhino population. It was declared a Reserve Forest in 1908, a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1950, and later became a National Park in 1974. Kaziranga was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 for its exceptional natural value. Over the decades, strong conservation programmes, including anti-poaching measures and habitat management, have helped increase populations of rhinos and other wildlife. Today, Kaziranga stands as a global symbol of successful wildlife conservation.
